ScienceLogic Database HA & DR

Previously I’ve looked at the overall ScienceLogic architecture, and HA options for the Collectors and UI. This post looks at DR and HA options for the core Database layer - the heart of the ScienceLogic system.

ScienceLogic - Collector and UI HA

Earlier I looked at the basics of ScienceLogic EM7 architecture. I didn’t cover how to achieve HA or DR with ScienceLogic. The architecture offers a few options for doing this, at each of the three layers - Collectors, UI and DB. In this post I’ll cover some HA options for the Collectors and the UI.

IPv4 Address Transfer Process

IPv4 exhaustion is a real issue for large parts of the world. IPv6 is the long-term solution, but it doesn’t solve today’s problems facing ISPs. Alternatives are needed - either CGN, or purchasing more IPv4 blocks on the open market. Recently I’ve been involved in the purchase & transfer process - here’s my notes on how it works within the APNIC region.

HP Simware - Comware OS Simulator

HP recently released “Simware”, a Comware network simulator that lets you create test networks of emulated Comware switches and routers. This can be used to create “virtual” networks, ideal for learning, feature validation, and change testing. It’s broadly similar to Dynamips. It’s not perfect, and it’s been a long time coming, but it’s a start.

Meraki AP Trial

Cisco Meraki offers a free wireless AP to anyone who registers for a webinar about their products. I had given up on receiving my AP, but after a moan on Twitter, it arrived. I’ve been using it in the office for a few weeks for simple wireless access, and I’m pretty impressed by it. The management interface is pretty slick, and it would clearly solve a lot of problems for anyone dealing with a widely distributed network.

HP VSR Portal Redirection

When implementing HP IMC UAM, you may need to redirect users to the IMC webserver, for device registration & configuration, and obtaining user 802.1x certificates. One method of doing this is to put users into an initial “Registration” VLAN, and configure an HP Comware device to redirect all web traffic. Here’s how to do it using HP’s VSR Virtual Router.

Network Automation - Stop Fighting It

Network Engineers should be embracing the idea of automating away the drudgery of running a network. They should be looking for ways to ensure the network can dynamically change its operation to ensure optimal application performance. But it seems there will be a lot of resistance to this, and it won’t be technical: It will be cultural.
